Four days of design (& cake)

Pitfield London Cafe

I think it would be fair to say that I lead a fairly busy life. By day I juggle 'my proper job' with being a full-time mum to two young children. Then in the evenings you can often find me wearing my creative hat blogging here at Heart Home and over on my personal blog at Buttercup days. Weekends are spent cooking (naturally), working down the allotment and trying to 'do up' our house. It's a fine balance at times. However, this week the balance and routine goes out the window as the proper job takes centre stage. It's that time of the year. The proper job is the PR company that I run with my husband and our tiny team of amazing staff. My parents have temporarely moved into our house to look after the kids, whilst we swap Brighton for Brick Lane as we return to the familiar surroundings of Tent London and Super Brands London, one of the largest design trade shows taking place during the London Design Festival. It's our sixth year doing this gig but we don't seem to tire of being surrounded by all the inspirational design. This year will see over 200 international exhibitors (in Tent London alone), showing the very latest in contemporary interior products - furniture, lighting, ceramics, textiles, materials and accessories.

Anyone who has ever visited Tent London will know it's a must-visit design event. Our on-site press office is a happy place to work. It's a chance for us to meet with our industry colleagues, catch up with old friends and hopefully forge new relationships. It is however busy. Really busy. And what is the most important thing to remember when you are busy? To eat and drink well.

In the past, this has been easier said than done. It can be hard waiting for a lull in order to nip out of the press office and grab some lunch down Brick Lane somewhere. Well, this year there will be no such problem. The Pitfield pop-up Cafe is coming to Tent and I for one am quite excited about it.

Pitfield London Cafe

Pitfield London is a shop, cafe and exhibition gallery in Hoxton, East London (just five minutes from Old Street station). The concept store reflects the owners, interior designer Shaun Clarkson’s and textile designer Paul Brewster’s, bold, whimsical tastes, creating a space, which is pure fantasy and escapism.

It is this very spirit that has been transported to Tent London for these next four days. The pop-up bar and cafe, with shop area, brings innovative design to life in an environment that people can experience and buy into. A community umbrella throughout London Design Festival, the Pitfield pop-up offers a meeting place and inspired gathering place in which to socialise or work.

Cafe manager, Eddy Grappy, has designed a mouthwateringly sumptuous menu for the occasion. Freshly ground, specialist coffee will be complemented by a selection of indulgent cakes made on-site. On the savoury side, super healthy salads and delicious sandwiches, all using local produce, will also be on the menu.

Giving you a taste of Pitfield’s bold statements and unforgettable colours, the pop-up space incorporates warm canary yellow counters made from reclaimed packing crates, retro stools and dining chairs in attractive pastel shades, and quirky, intricately composed scrapwood wallpaper by Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek, behind the bar. Funky shelving, formed from the end of turned-leg tables allow visitors to admire and purchase homewares and other curiosities from the Pitfield London emporium. Much like the store itself, the pop-up Pitfield London will attract the creative and curious, presenting a unique and attention grabbing space fuelled by colour, glamour and daring design.

With a busy four days ahead of me, I find it incredibly comforting to know that I'm never going to be far away from a slice of homemade cake and a cup of freshly brewed coffee. The very best in the latest contemporary design is all very well, but in my world you really can't beat a good lemon drizzle cake.
