Playing around with concrete

Concrete designs are becoming more popular than ever, you will find them in concrete floors, entryways, countertops, backsplashes, integrated sinks, pool decks, etc. Concrete is now fun and cool to use as a beautiful decorative element.

Plus the advancements in concrete tools, concrete stains and dyes, textures, and patterns have made it a versatile, durable and cost-effective material.

You might think concrete is a modern material, so you will be surprised to learn that the Assyrians and Babylonians used clay as the bonding substance or cement or that the Egyptians mixed lime and gypsum into their version, the Romans used crushed volcanic rock in their construction.

Concrete countertops are customized for each job, and have integral colours, acid stains, etc; colours range from deep terra cottas to warm gold’s. Although concrete countertops need to be resealed often, they are not difficult to care for. Because they are a porous material, the concrete can stain or mark as it ages.

When using coloured concrete countertops stains are not as evident, but beware acidic foods will lighten the colour; use water to dissipate stains when it happens.

Concrete will give a clean, sophisticated and consistent atmosphere to your room and it is less costly than other materials, and has vastly improved conditions for maintenance, safety, and durability.
