What Makes a Dream Home?

Millions of us harbour aspirations for our dream home, whether it’s an extravagant addition or a more modest ‘must-have’. Now research from Ocean Finance, a leading loan and mortgage broker and the author of this article, has found that top of the wish list is an indoor swimming pool.

More than a third of us dream about our own indoor pool, closely followed by a desire to have an en-suite bathroom and a summer house or conservatory.

Also high up on the dream home agenda are a walk-in wardrobe, a bigger garden and a Jacuzzi/hot tub. Some of us would also like a home gym and an open fire or log burner.

The survey shows that, far from being out of most people’s reach, many of our preferred home features are within our grasp. While a tennis court and a moat are a little ‘out there’, things like a pond, a garage and a shed are more achievable.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, men and women differ when it comes to their dream home. For example, 39% of women said that an en-suite bathroom is their second most desired feature, compared with just 25% of men.

And people living in the North East of England seem keener on an indoor swimming pool than anyone else in the country - while those living in Scotland are least likely to want one!
