From moor to dale, from spring to winter, Mini Moderns explore the landscape between their home towns.
The latest collection from Mini Moderns sees the design duo reflecting on their teenage years. Mark and Keith both grew up in Yorkshire towns, with the dales and moors never more than 30 minutes away. Moordale is their celebration of the countryside that surrounded them in the years before their move to ‘that London’.
The design depicts a landscape of rolling hills, punctuated by small towns and farms, edged with banks of Douglas Firs, and a single iconic oak tree. Two natural landmarks anchor the design: the Cow and Calf rocks that Mark visited in his youth, and Roseberry Topping, in whose shadow Keith grew up.
As the name suggests, the wallpaper stands as a visual record of the journey between the pair’s home towns – as Keith explains: “I grew up in North Yorkshire and Mark in West Yorkshire, and Moordale is literally a document of the distance between us, from the North York Moors to the Yorkshire Dales. This being our most personal collection to date, it seemed the right time to explore this theme.”
Mark, meanwhile, is keen to point out the cultural relevance of this design. “The idea came to us when we were re-watching all our favourite kitchen sink films. Whilst the settings are often urban and industrial, many of these films involve a turning point, when the protagonist escapes to the countryside to reflect on their existence. This print marks that moment in our development from teenage to adulthood.”
The four colourways were chosen to evoke the journey of the seasons, from a fresh spring Douglas Fir green, through vibrant summer Mustard, rich autumnal Harvest Orange to a tranquil winter Stone.
Moordale is the sixth print to launch from the forthcoming Mini Moderns collection, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, in which the design duo revisit the cultural influences that shaped their design aesthetic during their teenage years, growing up in the North during the 1980s.
Moordale is available in 4 seasonally-inspired colourways: Douglas Fir*, Mustard, Harvest Orange, and Stone. £50 per roll.* New for 2017, Douglas Fir is a forest green inspired by the bank of fir trees that lined the hills behind Keith’s family home.
