For their 2014/15 Hinterland collection, Mini Moderns have explored the history and culture of the Cinque Ports towns of Kent and Sussex, so it was both timely and fitting when Margate's Turner Contemporary approached the design duo to create a capsule print range for the gallery shop.
Opened in 2011, Turner Contemporary has proved a major catalyst in the ongoing regeneration of Margate, a town that holds a special place in the hearts of Mark and Keith of Mini Moderns. They explain: "Not only do we love visiting the gallery and the eclectic shops of neighbouring Old Town, we also have a special link to Margate as it's the home town and creative base of Mini Moderns Remix collaborator, artist Zoe Murphy. So when Turner Contemporary approached us we jumped at the opportunity."
The focal point of the collection is a tea towel that captures the charm of a vintage souvenir piece, framed with rope spelling out the town name. Nautical signal flags spell out 'Mini Moderns Margate' on one apron, whilst another features a repeat pattern of seagulls. The result is a loosely coordinating range, in Mini Moderns key colours, Indigo and Lido.
