Following on from my post last week about where to source vintage, I want to dedicate a whole post about the Salvo Fair. My love of salvage is as well documented as my love of vintage and one of my most successful hauls was last year’s Salvo Fair. This years Salvo Fair is only three weeks away on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June. More than eighty exhibitors will set up displays of 800 tonnes of stock, all of it for sale. Dealers from all over the UK, France, Belgium and Holland will bring architectural salvage, reclaimed materials, garden antiques and bygones with many saving their really interesting pieces for Salvo Fair.
If you are in need of authentic architectural doors, fireplaces, bricks, tiles, French bistro furniture, brass bedsteads, church pews and original Victorian flooring the Salvo Fair is the place for your quest.
One of the exhibitors, Reclamation Warriors (from France) will be bringing a big selection of old brass and iron bedsteads, lots of old cast iron cooking pots in traditional orange, red and black, and a collection of glass bonbons (antique demijohns) in traditional dark green, olive and brown. I’m planning on making a beeline for their stall.
It’s a well-known lament that many period properties have had their charm and character stripped out and using architectural salvage can help bring them back to their glory days. Another dealer Architectural Forum will have a selection of cast iron fireplaces, marble, wood and stone fire surrounds, reclaimed bricks and tiles, roll top baths, fire grates, garden statuary and garden furniture. Plenty of gems to get your home back in tip top condition.
There is also a great section at the fair known as recraft. This is where stock that needed a little revamp or repurposing is shown. Think doors and tables from reclaimed timber and metal-framed windows made into mirrors. A great place to pick up a unique piece without the need for DIY elbow grease.
A couple of tips to see you through and help you make the right decision
- Have a good rummage and be prepared to get dirty. Salvage items are often caked in dust and rust
- Have cash with you but also have change or smaller notes – particularly when negotiating a price (there is a cash point onsite)
- Take photographs (always ask permission first), measure up, and take notes
- Make sure it fits in your car – there isn’t always a delivery service.
