Farrow & Ball Decorating With Colour by Ros Byam

As I was writing the section of the book entitled ‘Dark Drama’, it occurred to me that it was about time I took my own advice. We have a ‘small and badly-lit’ inner hall and it was painted white. Surely we were missing an opportunity by not painting it something deliciously dusky instead? As soon as I thought of it, I couldn’t wait. We got our hands on some ‘Mahogany’ Estate Eggshell the same weekend and set to work. And, just as I had promised, the result was exciting and theatrical. Anything placed against it took on a new vibrancy, whether the self-portrait our daughter painted for an art examination or the plaster relief that had been languishing unappreciated on a windowsill. The hall has a faint air of mystery, and it still gives me a thrill every time I walk through it.

A Perfect English Townhouse by Ros Byam Shaw,

Seaside Inspiration - The home of Melanie Molesworth

'We saw the particulars for this house a long time before we decided to view it,' says Melanie. 'It had been hanging around for ages, was more than we wanted to spend, and enormous. A friend who loved Lyme Regis persuaded us that we should have a look at it, and when we did, it was obvious it had potential. We asked another friend, architect Ed Howell, for ideas and he came up with a plan for dividing it so that we could have a rental property, and an income.' They took the plunge, sold their house, ditched the idea of a London flat, and moved in. 'It was 2011, and I was very hot and cold about it, very nervous. But actually, it's been amazing.'

Win Two Interiors Books For Vintage Lovers

It's that time again where we are giving away two inspirational books for the vintage lovers outdoor.

The Vintage Home by Judith Miller

Vintage Home is both a practical collector’ s guide – what to look out for – and a celebration of the period. It covers both serious and costly designer creations, which sell in major auction houses worldwide, and cheerful mass-produced kitsch, which you can pick up in car boot sales, charity shops, flea markets and yard sales. It looks at objects from around the world that were made for every taste and budget.

Modern Retro by Caroline Clifton-Mogg,

In that yawning gap between the antique and the new, there is something else. Some call it vintage, some retro, but whatever the name the concept is the same – the objects and furniture that are not quite old and not quite new, but are always original and unique. Modern   Retro looks at this fascinating area of design and decoration. The arrangement of rooms – where to put what – has always been a vital part of successful interior decoration, and it is even more important when it comes to creating an interior that is a mixture of the expected and the completely unexpected. It is an art and it requires a real skill, for there has to be respect for every objet trouvé , as well as an understanding of how each element will work best. Modern  Retro   shows how to combine, how to edit and how to put the unlikely and the unusual together in a sympathetic way. Inspiration and ideas occupy every page of this absorbing book.

Art, craft and all things homemade have never been more popular and the trend for working from home continues apace. But it can be tricky to carve out a space in your house that lets you indulge your passion or earn a living from your creativity. Studio and study spaces are special places - full of creative spirit and practical potential - and there's never been a greater demand for a book that shows you how to carve out a corner that allows you to not only practice your craft, but inspires and facilitates the very work you create.

Real-life case studies from seven different countries, ranging from crafters, writers, designers and artists, show readers just what can be achieved on every budget. Many of the studio owners featured have a dedicated and ever-expanding social media following, including fashion designers Kiel James Patrick and Sarah Vickers, woodworker Ariele Alasko, designer Sarah Sherman Samuel, fine artist Lisa Congdon and decor8 blogger Holly Becker. Detailed chapters outline the vital pieces needed to create a functioning and inspirational studio space, while also taking an in-depth look into different styles of studios for craft and creative activities. With Studio, Sally Coulthard shows you that spaces for creativity can be easy to make, look beautiful, and fitted into any home.

In Fabric Pictures, Janet shows you how to create beautiful pictures on fabric. Taking you through her personal method, she will guide you to find the inspiration around you and teach you how to turn your creativity into a textile project and develop your personal ‘voice’.

The book is divided into two main sections – the first on how to find inspiration, the second on how to put your ideas into practice, complete with a step by step example that will show you every stage of construction from beginning to end. Just like in her workshops, Janet’s guidance in the book is friendly, reassuring and inspiring – once you finish your first project you won’t be able to wait to start the next.

Last but not least is First Time Knitting: Step-by-Step Basics and Easy Projects. Learning how to knit has never been simpler!
